Universal Recycling Symbols

A diverse group of stakeholders worked with the State of Vermont to develop a set of standardized symbols:

  • The familiar mobius arrows on a blue background to indicate recycling.
  • An apple core on a green background to indicate composting.
  • A trash can on a black background to indicate trash destined for landfilling.
  • A whole apple on a purple background to encourage donation and rescue of quality edible food for people in need.

ANR treats these images as in the public domain. Anyone may download, share, and use these images free of charge and without attributing ANR or the State of Vermont.

Businesses, haulers, solid waste management entities, parks, schools, and residents are encouraged to download and use the symbols. Great uses include:

  • Download files to add the symbols to mailings, websites, handouts, announcements, and more...
  • Print stickers to use for labeling trash, recycling, and food scrap totes at home or at your business
  • Print mini-stickers for outreach events (kids love 'em!) or client mailings
  • Add a symbol to the side of your commercial hauling trucks

If you are a Vermont resident and wish to use symbol stickers at home or for a community project, ask your solid waste management entity about ordering.

No Bags in the Recycling Poster (from Recycling Partnership)
PNG This image type generally allows for more manipulation of the image. For instance, you can resize it more successfully than a .jpg format; you can also make part of it ‘transparent’ like a transparent GIF image type. Use PNG for making print graphics or for the web, and for use in projects where the image will be needed in multiple versions.
PNG-ZIP "Zip" is a special name for a compressed file. Use the .zip option to download the image directly to your computer. 
JPG A good option for the web, as it is formally recognized by all browsers. JPG images do not respond well to frequent re-sizing and editing, so be mindful of how much the image will be manipulated. These are larger images that will do well on large posters and signs. 
JPG-ZIP "Zip" is a special name for a compressed file. Use the .zip option to download the image directly to your computer. 
PDF Portable Document Format (PDF) are single documents that can be viewed or printed easily on all computer types with Adobe Reader (available for free download here). They are stand-alone documents that cannot be embedded in common programs like Microsoft Word, Excel, PPT, basic paint applications, etc. PDFs are a good option for sign-making and printing.
